Job Title: Shop Mechanic Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Director of Transportation Department/School: Transportation Dept.
Primary Purpose: Perform daily activities of vehicle repair and maintenance to ensure proper performance of all district vehicles while at all times prioritizing safety, efficiency, and favorable appearance.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
· Class “A” CDL with proper endorsements.
· Associate Degree or equivalent 2 year College or technical school preferred.
· ASE or TASB certification preferred.
· Certified or able to obtain certification to perform state inspections on all district vehicles.
· Acceptable motor vehicle driving record; insurable by district carrier.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
· Advanced knowledge of diesel and automotive mechanics and maintenance.
· Ability to work with minimal supervision.
· Able to use vehicle computer assisted diagnostics.
· Experience in the use of new International engine diagnostics, Braun wheelchair lift and on board diagnostics.
· Must be available for emergency situations in an on-call status after regular work hours.
· Strengths in the ability to work cooperatively with people and exhibit the leadership commensurate with the duties of Shop Mechanic.
· Clear understanding of the high priority placed on safety.
Experience:
· Minimum three years verifiable experience in the repair and maintenance of Diesel and gasoline engines.
· Experience in care and management of property and the provision of equipment and services.
· Computer Diagnostic experience.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
· Responsible for the management and supervision of the upkeep and maintenance of all school buses, Transportation Department service vehicles, select other district vehicles, as well as related shop equipment and personnel.
· Be knowledgeable and remain current with all pertinent local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines with regards to facilities and environmental compliance issues.
· Acquire technical updates on vehicles and equipment as necessary to provide proper repair and maintenance, as well as disseminate same to all shop staff under their supervision.
· Must verify that safety-sensitive work orders are prioritized and communicate conditions which compromise safe operation of the vehicle and restrict its usage until all repairs are completed and inspected for placement back in service.
Assure that all related shop equipment and facilities are in safe and efficient working order.
· Assure that all supplies are acquired according to policy and other bidding requirements and to assure that those supplies not governed by current bidding status are obtained with the highest quality at the lowest price.
· Assure that all supplies, resources and man-hours are used in a safe and efficient manner.
· Maintain an ample supply of all regular inventory items in order to prevent unnecessary delay of equipment repair.
· Monitor fuel supply and document on daily log.
· Coordinate and/or participate in road calls; drive and operate wrecker when necessary.
· Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Supervise and assign work to be completed by Fleet Manager for district transportation. Assist Director of Transportation and Fleet Manager in the coordination of operating a safe and efficient maintenance program for district vehicles.
